"Do you know when you'll be chatting with the Haim sisters?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise wants to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are far from alone. A host of famous supporters have publicly begged for the role.

It's clear a special quality is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their musical journey doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy hopefuls.

In the tradition of the best bands, they're a close unit. Their music videos frequently show them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans approached us and said, 'After your show, I bought a bass'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the greatest honour. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire people to form a group."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group have called into home, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the prize.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I hallucinating'?"

The significance of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the pioneers that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The project emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The themes follow endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound confidence called for a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an international following.

But the band will consistently be their primary commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
